A little bit about me...
Hello, my name is Emma and I am an artist. I live in South Shields, a beautiful coastal town near Newcastle in the North East of England. I work from the comfort of my own home with my little side kick, Bonnie.
I have always loved to draw, paint and make things ever since I was very young; I believe creativity is simply just instilled in me and I was born to be an artist.
Art was my favourite subject at school and design was something I decided to continue studying. I studied a BA Honours degree in Fashion Design learning an abundance of skills, which I use today for my artwork, including: CAD, the use of different mediums (ink/ markers) and I suppose fashion illustrating helped me gain my fluidity and confidence in drawing. During my studies, I worked as an intern for a fashion house in New York, and although it was a thrilling experience (and very much like I was Andy Sachs in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ film), I knew then that this career path way wasn’t for me, something didn’t feel right and I had to trust my gut. I didn’t leave it behind completely, I still practice fashion designing and pattern cutting as a much-loved hobby today.
I started my art business around 4 years ago. I was a full-time Product Design teacher at the time and had been for about 5 years. I did artwork on weekends and over time I just knew that this was something I wanted to do more of, BUT I had a huge decision to make: - Continue teaching full time or follow my dreams? Because life is very short, I plucked up A LOT of courage and I reduced my teaching hours and changed my position; I now work 2 days a week at the same fantastic school and for the rest of the week, I focus on my business where I create beautiful bespoke art. I really do count my lucky stars to be in this fortunate position.
How did I get the ball rolling? I initially just started painting and drawing for free because, well I just enjoyed it so much and I felt honoured that people wanted to display my art on their walls. I then started to ask customers for a donation and then before I knew it, I had orders coming in and my business was growing- I could not believe it! I honestly felt like I was the luckiest girl in the world, and I was just so proud of myself.
What am I inspired by? You and your stories! Since starting, I have met the most wonderful people and created art based on so many of your experiences and memories, some happy and some sad (this definitely keeps me grounded and often, emotional). I am also inspired by: Coco Chanel, her character and determination as well as her stunning effortless fashion design; artists including Lowery, Monet and Lempicka for their smoothness and soft calming energy; the art nouveau movement for its curved lines inspired by nature and muted tones and nature in general- beautiful skies and landscapes that take your breathe away. My style in a few words: effortless, calming, emotional and smooth.
I produce various types of artwork including hand drawn personalised greeting cards; commissions of all kinds; hand drawn stunning bespoke wedding stationery; logos and murals. I also sell gorgeous South Shields inspired prints and greeting cards which I sell at The Word in South Shields.
